We are excited to announce Gray Area Gallery’s open call for our Summer Exhibition titled ‘Duality’!
Many of the artists we work with and the artworks that resonate most with us embrace a sense of duality and contrast. Duality can enrich an artwork in many ways, through the juxtaposition of ideologies, materials, and methods, or through the interplay of opposites such as dark and light, muted and vivid.
Artists with dual or multiple heritages, layered influences, or evolving identities often bring distinctive perspectives to their work. Likewise, artists who move between mediums or combine different practices can create works that feel especially dynamic and unexpected. Duality is the use of, and embracing of, two contrasting elements, within art this can materialise in many different ways!
This year we feature a Guest Curator, the artist & designer Mark Mann, who embraces duality throughout his works and states :
Within my own work duality explores the tension between beauty and rupture, where fragility and strength, mythology and personal experience coexist within the same space.
I’m interested in how objects can hold opposing emotional states simultaneously, such as tenderness and loss or refinement and erosion, where seductive surfaces reveal uneasy truths.
How does your artwork incorporate Duality? Do you comb
ine a mixture of materials? Are you depicting a double sided subject matter? Is your artwork inspired by contrasting ideas? Can your work be read in two different ways?
These are just some examples of how your work could fit our brief, and we are excited to hear how your work embraces Duality!
