Toko Shinoda (1913–2021) was Japan's most significant and pioneering 20th-century artists, renowned for bridging traditional Japanese calligraphy with modern abstract expressionism.
Her distinctive artistic style and independent spirit garnered international acclaim, particularly in the post-war New York art scene, where she was exhibited alongside artists like Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock.
Her work is held in major collections worldwide and known for its elegant, gestural lines, often featuring bold use of vermilion streaks against sumi ink and gold or silver leaf.
