Kazuo Shiraga is important as a pioneering member of the influential Japanese avant-garde Gutai Art Association, known for his radical, physical style of action painting where he famously painted with his feet.
Shiraga's most famous technique was using his feet to paint, suspending himself above canvases to slash toes through thick layers of oil paint. This physical and energetic approach was a radical departure from conventional methods.
