Marino Marini (1901 - 1980) was one of the most important Italian artists of the twentieth century, he was most known for his sculptural work of horses and his expressive busts.
His artworks are held in some of the largest and most highly renowned collections around the world, including the Peggy Guggenheim collection in Venice, TATE in London as well as having his own dedicated museum in Florence.

In this piece Marini is depicting his contemporary Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985) a renowned early Modernist artist. Marini often depicted expressive bust portraits, just as in this piece where Chagall age is emphasised with the loose expressive lines.
