Prince Genji in the Chapter “Under the cherry blossoms” by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) Published by Mitaya, Kihachi in 1855, 35 x 24cm - £195
The tale of Genji is a prominent subject matter in woodblock prints, it is considered by many to be the first ever written novel. Written by Murasaki Shikibu, a noble woman, in the early 11th century. The story allows a remarkable insight into Japanese culture at the time as it follows the life and endeavours of Prince Genji and his following generations.
This print by Kunisada depicts the protagonist Genji. He is depicted in a dramatic black outfit for which animal glue was used to create a pattern that shines through the ink as it catches the light. A beautiful example of the experimentation and ‘special effects’ that printers at the time incorporated into some works. Click on the link to view both picture of the artwork shown with two lightings, one darker and one with a light shining directly on it, showing the ‘special effect’ of the pattern.

We aim to display art that falls in the grey area of what's usually displayed. We want people to come together to interact with art of under-represented voices in the art world. We believe that art is vital and has the power to change people's views of the world and bring a community together.
